JSS1 Home Economics, Easter Term, Lesson1: Family Conflict.
COURSE INTRODUCTION
Conflicts are disagreement or arguments between people, groups, family members and even countries. Conflict can happen in the family when members have different views or beliefs that clash. If occur when family members misunderstand one another and jump into wrong conclusions. It often lead to argument.
Though it is normal for family members to disagree occasionally, long-lasting disagreements can be damaging to family relationships. When angry, some people lose their temper, become hurt, aggressive or even violent.
CAUSES OF CONFLICT
Conflicts are sometimes necessary for growth and better understanding of certain issues. The following are some causes of conflicts in a family:
(1). Conflicts Opinions and Ideas: Maturing children in the family form their own opinion and values which may clash with the views of their parents.
(2). Defiance: Older children sometime do not like to bend to discipline as easily as younger children and this may cause conflict.
(3). Family changes: Such as divorce, the arrival of a new born baby, moving to a new house. Causes family conflicts.
(4). Negligence: Conflicts can arise when parents focus so much on their jobs to the detriment of their family. The neglected family members may feel lonely and resentful toward the parents. Also, when parents show more love or attention to one child and neglect the other it may lead to conflict.

WAYS OF RESOLVING CONFLICTS
(1). Dialogue: This refers to communication between or among the people involved in the conflict. If they are too angry to talk calmly, they should first try to cool off. The individuals should then talk about their differences. Each party should then listen to the other. While in dialogue, each party should avoid bringing up other unresolved and unrelated issues.

(2). Negotiation and Compromise: This is trying to reach an agreement by discussion. To achieve an agreement to end the quarrel, each party should not insist on winning the argument at all cost. They should not stubbornly stick to their guns. They should rather respect the view of one another by paying attention and listening to the other party’s argument.

(3). Mediation: This means involving a third party in resolving a conflict between two people or more who are disagreeing. They third parties may be elders in the family or neighbourhood. These pacify the disagreeing parties and help them to resolve the conflict
When resolving, there must be an underlying attitude of respect, care, forgiveness and goodwill.
(4). Patience: As much as possible, we should be at peace with everyone in the family.
Note that love binds people together, therefore we should love ourselves and love every member of our family.
