SS2 CIVIC EDUCATION, EASTER TERM, LESSON 9. DRUG AND ABUSE.
COMMON WAYS OF ABUSING DRUGS
1. Misuse of Prescribed Drugs: This could occur when a patient uses the drugs prescribed in a way that differs from the doctors prescription, by taken more or less of the doctors’ prescribed dosage and may not even complete the dosage. Once any prescribed drugs are not used accordingly, it is said to be misused and abused.
2. Self-Medication: This is the act of administering or using drugs without consulting a medical personnel. This can worsen the condition or health of the user and could lead to untimely death.
3. Excessive Intake of Alcohol Drinks: When people indulge on excessive intake of alcohol drinks to the extent of getting drunk and loosing coordination, it amounts to an abuse of drugs.
4. Chain Smoking: Excessive smoking of cigarette or snuffing can endanger one’s health and therefore is an abuse of drug.
5. Taking of Hard Drugs: The use of prohibited hard drugs such as cocaine, heroine, marijuana in order to feel high and get disconnected from realities of life, is a good case of drug abuse.
Methods of Taking Drugs
i. Smoking the leaves e.g opium.
ii. Swallowing the tablets or liquid.
iii. Injecting through the veins such substances as morphine, heroine, pentazacine.
iv. Inhaling e.g. cocaine, sprays, glues, paint, thinner, nail polish remover, petroleum.etc.
v. Licking or snuffing powder commonly known as snuff e.g. cocaine, tobacco and heroine.
Reasons Why People Indulge in Drugs
Some factors that can lead to drug abuse have been identified
They include:
i. Peer group pressure characterized by the desire to be accepted among friends or in social circles.
ii. Social pathologies such as employment and economic frustration.
iii. Emotional and psychological stress characterized by anxiety, depression, low-self esteem, etc.
iv. Easy accessibility to substances.
v. Environmental Influence from family, school, workplace, neighbourhood or community.
Symptoms of Drug Abuse
Drug abuse leads to drug addiction
Drug addiction: This is the constant need or craving for drugs. Drug addiction is a psycho-social condition in which one drug user depends habitually on drugs or a particular drug to be able to function in all areas or a given area of his life.
